Landscape Boxes

From the very beginning of my career as a silversmith the landscape has provided an endless inspiration for me. In 2017 it had a particularly strong influence on my work. I spent most of the year training with master silversmiths in Scotland and England and as a result travelled across the UK. I saw the landscape dramatically change from undulating hills in England to strong powerful mountains in Scotland and I wanted to capture these beautiful natural scenes in a series of 100 boxes

For this project I present two styles of landscape box. One making use of my digital design expertise in 3D printed nylon and walnut, and the other utilising my skills as a traditional silversmith in Sterling Silver and walnut.

3D Printed nylon is a strong, light material that has a beautiful texture and is very pleasant to touch. It is a perfect material for creating a landscape as the texture of it looks very similar to topographical lines on a map. I have used data gathered from Google Maps to digitally sculpt these boxes before having them 3D printed.

How do you choose my location?

Step 1

Choose your location and find it on Google Maps. This could be anywhere you want: where you grew up, a favourite holiday location or somewhere you would like to visit one day!

Step 2

Once you have your location on Google Maps you need to drop a pin on the location by clicking on the map. If you have chosen a town or a location that is identified on Google Maps click near but not on the location. Short video to the right.

Step 3

Once you have found your location on Google Maps at the bottom of the screen is the Longitude and Latitude co-ordinates of your chosen location. This is the nugget of information that will allow Hamish to start work on your personalised box.
